Statement reasserts Irish govt’s commitment to reciprocal driving licence exchanges
Committee member and TD Johnny Guirke has passed on a response from his correspondence with Neale Richmond, TD, the Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora. in it, the Minister states his commitment to reciprocal driving license exchange agreement with the US.
In his letter dated 16 May, Minister Richmond says:
The Government is committed to facilitating the return of emigrants to Ireland, including through establishing reciprocal driving licence exchange agreements with the US, as set out in the Programme for Government.
I am working with the Minister of Transport to deliver on this commitment. Our aim is to ensure that we focus on those US states where we can maximise the benefit for our citizens. Work is already underway to identify priority states for establishment of reciprocal agreements, though I should point out that some US states may, due to their own legal and regulatory requirements, not be in a position to conclude an exchange agreement.
I will travel to the US on several occasions in the period ahead and will take every opportunity to raise the importance and value of such agreements and will keep you informed as the process evolves.
Our thanks to Johnny Guirke for following up!
